How to install WordPress on your Windows using Xampp Server

Before you make your website live on the server the best way is to install WordPress on the localhost (Windows). In this way, you have the opportunity to test and develop things for free. If you want to move the website to the live server then you have to buy hosting or domain.

WHAT IS XAMPP?

XAMPP stands for Cross Platform Apache Mysql PHP Perl

What is Apache?

Apache basically serves various functions like delivering the requested file when someone hits a URL in browser
It is open source and cross platform
It also handles multi processes
SSL, V3 and TLS suppport
.htaccess, http/ftp, URL rewriting, Bandwidth, IP Adresses are some of the major functions.

Whata is MYSQL?

MySql stands for My Structured Query Language.
It is responsible for Database operations.
For example:
There is a Student Database. They MySql can do following operations.
Create Tables,
Delete, update and modify Tables.
SQL queries, Triggers, Functions and Cascading are some of most common used in MYSQL

What is PHP?

PHP stands for ‘Hypertext Preprocessor”.
It is an open-source and high-level language. language. Php runs on the backend server therefore we can say it is a server-side language.This language is used specifically for Website Development.
Many popular Frameworks like Laravel and CodeIgniter is built on PHP.
It is very easy to learn and popular CMS like WordPress is also based on PHP.

What is Perl?

Perl is a general-purpose programming language. Perl stands for “Practical Extraction Reporting Language”.
It can be used for the following:

  • Networking
  • Website Development
  • Backend Language
  • Network Programming

Let us start installing WordPress on localhost.

STEP 1:

Download following files for installation:

1- Download WordPress file from wordpress.org

2- Download Xamp

For Xampp you should download the type of operating system you are using. i.e. 64 BIT or 32 BIT

To check operating system type do below steps:
Go to Control Panel » System

If you have 64-Bit then download 64 bit XAMPP otherwise you can download 32-BIT version

STEP 2:

INSTALLATION OF XAMPP

Afer clicking you will see below Xampp Control Panel

click start infront of Apache and MySql

Apache and Xampp should start. You can see the blue text on above image. Click on admin in front of MySql.

Login phpMyAdmin

If you see this screen its mean your Xampp server is installed correctly!
Click Go to open database section

STEP 3:

Create Database for WordPress

you can type any name. In my case I have typed ‘my_wp’ for database name.

STEP 4:

Extract WordPress file and copy it.

copy WordPress folder and then paste at ‘C:/xamp/htdocs/’

STEP 5:

Now type ‘localhost/wordpress’ in your browser address bar and then click let’s go

After clicking let’s go you will see following screen.

type database name ‘my_wp‘ which we created in step 3.

type username as ‘root’ which is by default phpmyadmin’s username

leave password empty

and rest of the values like ‘localhost’ and ‘wp_’ will remain same.

Enter any title, username, password and email you want.
After completing the form press Install WordPress.

If you successfully install the WordPress, login prompt will be displayed.

now again type ‘localhost/wordpess’ on your browser address and then you will see your wordpress website
